Where a Butler County Case Is Filed

A lawsuit over an injury that happened in Butler County is often filed in:

Court of Common Pleas of Butler County
Fiftieth Judicial District of Pennsylvania
Butler County Courthouse and Government Center
124 West Diamond Street, Butler, PA 16001

Pennsylvania’s venue rules decide which county a lawsuit belongs in. In general, a case can be filed in the county where the injury happened (the place where the “cause of action arose”). It may also be filed where an individual defendant can be served, or where a business defendant has its main office or regularly does business. Medical malpractice cases follow the same general venue rules as other cases; the special malpractice venue rule was rescinded effective January 1, 2023. Choosing the right court is one of the first decisions we make with you.

Crashes on Butler County Roads

Butler County’s busiest roads include I-79, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Route 8, Route 228 and Route 19 through Cranberry Township. Growth around Cranberry and Route 228 has brought heavier traffic, construction zones and commercial vehicles.

After a crash: get medical care, call the police, photograph the scene and vehicles, and keep every bill and insurance letter. See our car accident and truck accident guides.

Hospitals and Medical Care

Butler Memorial Hospital is in the City of Butler. In the south of the county, UPMC Passavant–Cranberry is in Cranberry Township. Many Butler County patients are also treated in the North Hills and in Pittsburgh.

Naming a hospital here is for orientation only. It does not suggest that any hospital or provider did anything wrong. Most care is good care; a malpractice case exists only when care falls below accepted standards and causes harm.

When care in one county leads to treatment in another, the records from every provider matter. Read about failure to diagnose and informed consent.

Butler County FAQ

Do you have an office in Butler County?

No. We have one office, at 434 Beaver Street in Sewickley. We represent Butler County clients from there, and you can start by phone, text or our contact form.

Was I required to sue in the county where my medical care happened?

Not since January 1, 2023. Before then, Pennsylvania had a special venue rule for malpractice cases. The Supreme Court rescinded it, and malpractice cases now follow the same venue rules as other cases. Where to file depends on where the care happened and where the defendants are located or do business.

How long do I have to bring a claim?

In Pennsylvania, most personal injury, medical malpractice and wrongful death claims must be filed within two years (42 Pa.C.S. § 5524). If a government agency or public employee may be responsible, written notice is generally required within six months (42 Pa.C.S. § 5522). Exceptions can shorten or extend these deadlines, so call us early rather than late.
